Backlist Revival Tour | In Over Her Head by Anne Plaza

In Over Her Head by Anne Plaza is the siren song of every girl who’s ever been left hanging. Ten years ago, Erika Marie Apostol was dumped by her college boyfriend, and even if she’d never admit it, the memory still stings after all these years. Now, Richard, her ex-boyfriend, is back from Singapore, and Erika is about to find out if revenge is indeed a dish best served cold.

She and her crazy friends enlist the help of the handsome DJ Jerome in a crazy scheme that just might work. Whether Erika will get her happy ending or another broken heart remains to be seen…

God, I loved the premise of this book. Who wouldn’t want payback after you get an it’s-not-you-it’s-me speech instead of the proposal you were expecting? Erika, the protagonist, is completely relatable. She’s not one of those brainless heroines who just goes along with everything. She’s a real human being who understands that the situation might be crazy but tries to make the most out of it.

And who wouldn’t want to be caught between two great guys like Jerome and Richard? The book questions whether you should give the past a second chance or move forward with someone new, and it answers it quite satisfyingly.

Funny enough, I also loved how the friendships in the book are depicted. Erika and her friends are getting married, handling busy careers, and trying to stay in touch—struggles that my friends and I can currently relate to. It was nice seeing a typical college barkada depicted in contemporary fiction.

The pop culture references were my only issue with the book. Some of them took place years ago and obviously dated the book, making it lose some of its “contemporary” feel if that makes any sense.

Overall, I highly enjoyed In Over Her Head and highly recommend it to people who have a thing for second chance love stories… with a bit of scheming thrown in.

I shrug, not trusting myself to speak. Suddenly the entire scenario feels like something out of a cheesy movie: tiny, blinking lights peppering the ink-black sky, the night breeze sending a fresh wave of goose bumps on my skin, and Jerome’s presence making my senses go haywire.

“Sorry, I don’t have a jacket with me, so I hope this would do.”

I don’t realize I’ve been rubbing my arms and Jerome must have taken that to mean that I’m getting cold. He pulls me close to his side and I can feel the warmth emanating from his solid body.

What the hell is happening?

I can barely move a muscle, much less breathe, at the closeness we’re sharing. I know we’ve done this several times before, but they were all for show when Richard’s around to mess with. But this time, there’s no Richard, no acting, no nothing. Just me and him, inhaling cigarette smoke while killing time.

I struggle to get some small talk going, but I find myself at a total loss for words. Jerome doesn’t seem to mind the lack of conversation and is just content with us burning our lungs away and…cuddling.

I try to shift my weight to my other side, but he pulls me a bit closer. “We don’t really need to do this. No one’s watching.” I don’t realize I say those words until they’re out of my mouth. I look furtively at Jerome’s expression.

“So you’ll know that I’m not doing this for show either.”

I frown slightly. “Do what?”

And the next thing I know, he’s kissing me. But that’s not what’s shocking at all.

It’s that I kiss him back.
